The weekly saga of whether quarterback Cam Rising will suit up for the Utah Utes looks set to be over. Head coach Kyle Whittingham issued an update on Monday that could bring an end to the two-time Pac-12 winner’s season — and career.
Latest Injury Update Spells Longterm Stint on the Sideline for Utah QB Cam Rising
In the wake of their defeat to the Arizona State Sun Devils, Whittingham met with the media on Monday and gave an update on the health of quarterback Rising. Sadly for Utes fans, it looks like the star signal-caller will be on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Whittingham told reporters that Rising will be out “indefinitely,” ending a weekly will-he, won’t he routine.
Whittingham also confirmed the future plans for the position as the Utes look to overturn a 1-2 start to life in the Big 12. True freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson will be the Utah starter “until further notice,” according to the Utah head coach.

Wilson has appeared in five games this fall as Rising has attempted to overcome multiple health issues. During his time under center, the brother of former BYU Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson has thrown for 830 yards and six touchdowns, completing 55.7% of his passes in four wins.
Rising returned to the starting lineup in Week 7 against Arizona State but was a shadow of his former self in the defeat. He completed just 43.2% of his passes for 209 and contributed to the defeat with three interceptions. In limited outings for the Utes this fall, he has completed just 51.5% of his pass attempts for 555 yards and seven touchdowns.
At 25 years old, Rising has had his share of injuries. He missed most of the 2020 season due to a shoulder injury and was forced to medically redshirt in 2023 after tearing his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in the previous Rose Bowl.
Although he is one of the oldest players in college football season, there is a chance that this latest injury setback isn’t the end of Rising’s Utah career. Having played just three games this season, he can apply for a medical redshirt. However, his future plans remain to be seen. For now, all we know is that he will be out “indefintely.”
