Buffs Clock Solid 40s at Pro Day, but Coach Prime’s Time Still Wins

The Colorado Buffaloes recently held their NFL Pro Day, giving quarterback Shedeur Sanders, two-way star Travis Hunter, and other draft-eligible players a chance to perform in front of a large group of NFL scouts.

Neither Sanders nor Hunter participated in drills at the NFL Combine or at the Big 12 Pro Day in March, making this their first full workout in front of scouts. While their time on the field was short, it proved productive. Several Buffaloes logged solid 40-yard dash times, though none could top the legendary number Deion Sanders put up at the 1989 combine.

Deion Sanders Still the Fastest Man at Colorado

Coach Prime’s 40-yard dash from 1989—clocked at 4.27 seconds—is widely considered one of the most iconic in NFL Combine history, though it ranks 12th all-time, according to official records.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy currently holds the top spot with a 4.21-second run at the 2024 Combine.

Deion turned the 40-yard dash into a family challenge at Pro Day, telling his son Shilo Sanders he’d buy him a car if he ran the sprint in 4.4 seconds or faster. Shilo gave it a go but fell short, clocking times of 4.52 and 4.59 seconds. Still, those are respectable numbers for a safety and highlight Shilo’s potential as he heads into the draft process.

While most eyes were on Shedeur, the lighthearted moment allowed Coach Prime to shift some of the attention toward Shilo, who has largely flown under the radar compared to his quarterback brother.

    Other Standouts at Pro Day

Colorado wide receiver LaJohntay Wester posted an unofficial 40 time of 4.53 seconds, slightly slower than the 4.46 he reportedly ran at the NFL Combine. Jimmy Horn Jr., another Buffaloes wideout, ran an unofficial 4.40, according to DNVR Buffs’ Jake Schwanitz.

Despite solid showings across the board, no one came close to Sanders’ iconic mark. Coach Prime, even decades after his playing days, still holds one of the fastest 40 times ever recorded by a defensive back.
