Florida State struggled to cover large spreads last season, failing to cover five of their nine double-digit spreads, including the last three straight, highlighted by an outright loss to Georgia Tech last week as a double-digit favorite.
In contrast, Boston College has covered three of the last four spreads as an underdog against AP-ranked opponents, including a 31-29 defeat to the ‘Noles in 2023. The Eagles hit the over in nine of their 13 games in 2023.
But they finished 2023 with a 5-8-0 record against the spread.
Because FSU has already played a game, and it was a disappointing loss as a huge favorite, this line has seen some wild movement since its opening in May.
The line initially opened with Florida State as a more than three-touchdown favorite at -23. By early August, it was down to -21.5, but then the Seminoles lost to Georgia Tech, and bettors immediately began to fade Mike Norvell’s team against Boston College, and the spread started to plummet.

From Aug. 24 to Aug. 26, the line has fallen from 21.5 to 16.5, skipping several key numbers and coming down by almost two possessions. It’s held true or close to true at the 16.5 number since the initial fall.
Florida State vs. Boston College Prediction
It’s hard to imagine Florida State feeling any lower than they do right now. For a team that finished 2023 with an undefeated regular season and an ACC title, things have been a trainwreck since.
They were the first undefeated Power Five conference champions left out of the old college football format. They followed that up with the worst bowl game loss in program history, as Georgia embarrassed the Noles 63-3.
As they tried to put 2023 in the rearview, they kicked off 2024 with a shocking loss to unranked Georgia Tech in front of the entire college football world, as it was the 2024 college football season kick-off.
Boston College’s Bill O’Brien era is officially set to begin. The Eagles finished last season with a 7-6 record, going 3-5 in ACC play. They had a rough start, opening 1-3 with losses to NIU, Florida State (31-29), and Louisville.
However, they bounced back with five consecutive wins against Virginia, Army, Georgia Tech, and UConn. Despite losing their last three regular-season games, Boston College ended on a high note by defeating SMU 23-14 in the Fenway Bowl.
It feels a bit crazy to say, but I love this spot for Florida State. Currently, 75% of the tickets and 61% of the money are spent on Boston College. That’s a lot of action on a road dog against a nationally ranked team in their home opener.
We were on Georgia Tech in the opener. But that is because they are an outstanding football team that is only improving. That doesn’t mean Florida State is bad.
Norvell is a very good football coach. While the offense left a lot to be desired, one has to believe that the loss to Georgia Tech was a wake-up call for both sides of the ball.
Florida State was shocked by how good Georgia Tech was in the trenches in Week 0, as I believe most opponents of the Yellow Jackets will be in the coming weeks.
The ‘Noles will be much better against the run defensively against Boston College. I also believe QB DJ Uiagalelei and this offense look much improved from Week 0.
Prediction: Florida State 31, Boston College 10
