After posting a 40-12 record in four seasons at the helm of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, including a 33-5 mark over his last three seasons, Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier is 11-14 his first two seasons in Gainesville, Fla. Ahead of his third season in command of the Gators, Napier staunchly believes his job is secure despite a slow two-year start. What did he say about his job security at SEC Media Days?
Billy Napier Believes Gators Are “On Schedule”
Expectations were high for Napier in Gainesville after experiencing remarkable success in Lafayette, La., earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year twice (2019, 2021), winning two Sun Belt Championships (2020-2021), and four consecutive Sun Belt West Division titles (2018-2021).
Napier cooled off in Gainesville, finishing the 2022 season 6-7 after losing to Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl. That campaign was Napier’s first losing record as a head coach.
It got even worse the following year with the Gators regressing by a game and finishing the 2023 season at 5-7. Florida failed to reach the six-win minimum for bowl eligibility and missed out on a postseason appearance for the first time since 2017.
Before stepping to the podium at SEC Media Days, Napier said in a media scrum, “Change doesn’t happen overnight, and I think ultimately timing is everything, right? When we took the job, and what we inherited, the work that needed to be done, I think we’re on schedule.
“We should have won a couple games down the stretch, we would have liked to close some of those games out in the fourth quarter absolutely, but reality is, from a system and process standpoint, in-house, the culture, I think we’ve made tremendous progress.”
Gator HC Has “Confidence” From Inside Perspective
Napier clarified that statement further once at the podium during SEC Media Days: “We’re evaluating the game over the last couple years. It’s changed significantly every six months, every season, every offseason. Not only are we trying to create culture at Florida — we’re building new facilities, we’re creating infrastructure.
“You go back to the very beginning, you’re hiring a staff, you’re trying to improve the roster. The game continued to evolve while we’ve been doing that, so that’s where the challenge has been.
“I’m on the inside. I get a chance to be around our staff and our players, going all the way back to the beginning of this offseason. That’s what gives me confidence.”
While Napier might be confident, SEC fans are many things … but patient isn’t one of them. Regressing by one game in Year 2 is enough for the Gator faithful to turn the heat up on Napier’s seat. He may not feel the burn yet, but if Florida doesn’t come out the gate hot to start the year, his time in Gainesville will likely run out.
