WATCH: Ohio State QB Coach Billy Fessler Breaks Down Julian Sayin’s Footwork

Julian Sayin is entering his first year at the helm of one of the greatest college football teams in history, the Ohio State Buckeyes. While Sayin will have big shoes to fill, Ohio State’s quarterback coach, Billy Fessler, broke down Sayin’s impressive footwork.

The Ohio State football team looks to have a repeat of 2024 when they defeated Notre Dame in the College Football National Championship in January. While Sayin had minimal time on the field, he saw the field in Ohio State’s dominant season, backing up Will Howard and occasionally Devin Brown.

Sayin completed five of his minimal 12 pass attempts in 2024. He picked up a touchdown and even threw a 55-yard pass in his short time on the field. Despite it only being garbage minutes, Sayin has shown a lot in his short time on the field in 2024. He finished with a quarterback rating of 128.0 and didn’t throw an INT in his 12 attempts.

As spring practices get underway, there is a quarterback competition on Ohio State’s field. Despite Sayin being the favorite to win the starting job, he’s faced competition from Lincoln Kienholz and Tavien St. Clair. Fessler spoke briefly about the quarterback competition.

“I think we’re a long way away from even talking about how close it is,” Fessler said via Eleven Warriors. “Right now, those three guys are really just focused on getting better every single time they step in this building, in the meeting rooms, or when they step on the field in practice.”

Fessler has had the opportunity to scout and watch all three of these quarterbacks and will ultimately play a significant role in deciding who wins the starting job heading into the upcoming college football season. Fessler also spoke briefly on Sayin’s impressive footwork.

“Julian definitely has a quick release, that’s for sure,” says Fessler. “I think that it could definitely be an advantage, and just the ability to get the ball to his receivers quickly. At the same point, you can’t sacrifice arm strike for a quick release.”

“So, we’ll continue to work to build that arm strength, strengthen his core, and to work rotationally because he is such a rotational thrower, and to be able to maximize his moments both between his lower half and his upper half so he can get that ball out with enough velocity to be successful.

“So, he definitely has a quick release, but there’s so much more at playing at quarterback, than just having a quick release, so we’re really working through all those other things right now.”
