The SEC title chase in 2025 is already heating up, and it’s only June. With projected win totals now out, the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Texas Longhorns are leading, each pegged at 9.5 victories.
However, not everyone’s convinced. A CFB analyst thinks it won’t be easy for these powerhouses. So, what might hold them back in the battle for SEC supremacy?
Analyst Warns of Possible 2025 Setbacks for Texas, Georgia, and Alabama
On his show “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” ESPN’s Greg McElroy weighed in on the SEC title race, and it’s not all chalk picks. McElroy didn’t just highlight who could come out on top; he also pointed out that some of the conference’s top names might fall short of expectations this season.
“Even the top teams have question marks. I mean, that’s part of the evaluation. It’s not so much the depth of the league, it’s the class of the league. The Alabama, Georgia, and Texas of the world all come into this season with significant questions—and especially at the most important positions,” McElroy said.
McElroy expressed notable concerns about the three top football programs. Regarding Texas, he remains cautiously optimistic about QB Arch Manning. Manning impressed in 2024 despite limited action; he threw for 806 yards and eight touchdowns and completed 69.4% of his passes.
But McElroy wants to see him perform against elite competition before entirely buying into the hype. He pointed to Manning’s struggles against Georgia as a reason for skepticism.
McElroy also raised doubts about Georgia’s ability to stay dominant. He questioned whether Gunner Stockton is ready to lead the offense. He’s unsure if the Bulldogs can replace key losses on the offensive line. He also pointed out ongoing issues with their defensive front, especially against some versions of the run game.

Alabama wasn’t spared from scrutiny either. McElroy expressed concern about quarterback Ty Simpson’s ability to deliver in big games and the possibility that the Crimson Tide’s pass rush may fall short if the front can’t generate pressure consistently. However, he added that Alabama would be good if it adequately replaced Tyler Booker on the offensive line.
Can Georgia and Alabama fix these issues before the season begins, and can Manning elevate his game enough to lead Texas into serious SEC title contention? Time will tell.
