Colorado safety Shilo Sanders did not get an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine next week in Indianapolis. But instead of feeling sorry for himself, he decided to take it upon himself and hired Zybek Sports, a local company that has been timing 40-yard dash runs at the NFL Combine for 13 years, to measure his speed in Boulder.

Mike Florio on Shilo Sanders’ 40-Yard Dash Plan
The timing session was set to be similar to the Combine’s format. Mike Weinstein, the owner of Zybek Sports, flew to Colorado to work with Sanders and came up with detailed speed data that compared his times to those of players at the combine.
The idea was to get Sanders ready for Colorado’s Pro Day in a few weeks, when NFL scouts will visit to evaluate him and other draft picks.
Even though Sanders wasn’t one of the four Buffs invited to the event, he’s hopeful for his NFL dreams.
However, analyst Mike Florio pointed out some issues with his 40-yard dash plan. Referring to the combine’s home, Lucas Oil Stadium, Florio wondered if the safety way would be able to replicate the exact combine conditions at Boulder.
“I like that, it’s creative,” Florio said. “But there’s one glitch in that thought process, and it has to do with the surface, and I’ve been hearing about this for years. How do you compare the times at Lucas Oil Stadium on the surface to the times that are run elsewhere on different surfaces?
“It’s one of the sneaky little things scouts will add a tenth [of a second] based upon where it is that a guy has run his 40. If you really want to do it right, find a way to get access to Lucas Oil Stadium and do it there.”

Sanders might be selected as a late draft pick or an undrafted free agent. But he did show his potential during the 2023 season, where he led his team in tackles and finished third overall, even after missing three games because of a broken forearm.
He also played in the East-West Shrine Bowl all-star game, making five tackles.
