Jalen Hurts’ Freshman Year Was One for the Ages

As a true freshman, Hurts had a 13-1 record as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s quarterback. He accumulated many awards, including the 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

He finished the season with 3,734 yards of total offense (2,780 passing, 954 rushing) to record the second-highest single-season total in Crimson Tide history.

He continued his success in 2017, leading the Crimson Tide to a National Championship game appearance. His stat line included 2,081 yards, 17 touchdowns, and one interception. He also had 855 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns.

In the 2017 National Championship, the Crimson Tide were struggling, and Hurts was benched in favor of freshman Tua Tagovailoa.

In 2018, Tua started the following season with Hurts backing him up. Hurts and Tagovailoa earned reps throughout the season, but Hurts bailed out Tagovailoa in the SEC championship and announced his transfer to Oklahoma for 2019.

Jalen Hurts’ 2019 in Oklahoma Was Another Record-Breaking Year

Following his transfer to Oklahoma, Hurts broke the Sooners’ single-game yardage record, gaining 508 yards in his first start against Houston.

The Sooners went 7-0 out of the gate, with Hurts guiding them to a Big 12 Championship. The Sooners lost the Peach Bowl 63-28 to LSU.

Hurts was even better than he was at Alabama, throwing for 3,851 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, eight interceptions, 1,298 rushing yards, and 20 rushing touchdowns.

He was second in the Heisman Trophy to Joe Burrow.

The Eagles took Hurts 53rd overall and placed him third on their depth chart, but he saw action against the Green Bay Packers in December of 2020 after Carson Wentz failed to get it done against the Green Bay Packers.

Hurts finished the 2020 season 1-3 as a quarterback, throwing for 1,061 yards and six touchdowns against four interceptions. He also had 354 yards on the ground to go with three touchdowns.
