Urban Meyer Says Ohio State’s Recruiting Class is Top-Tier, Still Prone To 2 Losses in 2025

On a recent episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, former Ohio State coach-turned-analyst Urban Meyer and co-hosts Mark Ingram and Rob Stone previewed the 2025 season for Ohio State. Despite significant roster turnover and new coaching additions in Columbus, Ohio State has proactively addressed the loss of talent with a highly successful recruiting effort.

247Sports has the reigning national champions with the fourth-ranked recruiting class, led by three five-star and eighteen four-star talents. The MGM Sports Book currently has Ohio State’s over-under at 10.5 wins in their 12-game schedule next season, which was the jumping-off point for this segment. Will the Buckeyes go over the win total?

Urban Meyer Praises Ohio State’s Recruiting but Sets Modest 10-Win Ceiling

On the surface, Urban Meyer is still predicting a strong performance for the Buckeyes, just half a game under their line. They are fresh off a National Championship, and Meyer is very complimentary of their recruiting class. Still, there will be a lot of change in Columbus this season.

As Rob Stone points out, 15 of the players who graduated are likely to be drafted in this week’s upcoming NFL Draft. The Buckeyes have new coordinators on both sides of the ball and new key starters at positions like quarterback. When Stone asked if he would call this Buckeyes team a young one, Meyer responded by calling them an inexperienced one.

Meyer cited several reasons for choosing ten wins this season, including the offseason changes, the lack of senior leadership, and a few tough matchups on the schedule.

The crew went through the entire Ohio State schedule and identified nine wins and three games that they viewed as question marks. The three that fit the latter category were the Texas, Penn State, and Michigan games.

Ultimately, Ingram and Meyer agreed that if they were to win one of these three and go 10-2, especially given all of the changes from 2024, this would be an impressive number to hit for coach Ryan Day and company. Meyer added that he expected this inexperienced team to grow up and into form by the end of the year.

As Ingram points out, with the new playoff format that debuted last season, 10 wins (their number from last year) will be enough to get into the postseason and have a chance to make a run again.

Meyer remained complimentary of their standout recruiting class and said Ohio State has set the standard in college football for over a decade.

Despite that, he seems to view the early part of this upcoming season as a learning experience that should set them up for another shot at a championship. Time will tell if they can prove Meyer and Ingram wrong in 2025.
