Stokes’ connection to UConn is deep. From 2011 to 2015, she led the Huskies to win three consecutive NCAA championships. Her defensive skills were especially impressive; she established a single-season record with 147 blocks in her senior year and is second all-time in program history for blocks and blocks per game, trailing only Breanna Stewart.
Stokes continued her successful career in the professional arena. She was selected 11th overall by the New York Liberty in the 2015 WNBA Draft and later joined the Las Vegas Aces in 2021. With the Aces, she contributed to winning back-to-back WNBA titles in 2022 and 2023, demonstrating her constant impact on the floor.
Given her strong relationship with UConn, it’s logical that Stokes would openly praise the school’s recent achievements. Her reaction to the backlash underscores a larger discussion regarding athletes’ connections to their collegiate roots and how the public interprets such relationships.
