Devonte Ross’ Breakout Performance’s Impact on Penn State

One of the most notable discussions during Franklin’s media session revolved around the wide receiver. He shared what ultimately convinced Penn State to bring Ross into the fold. Franklin specifically pointed to Ross’ standout performance against Iowa. The game cemented the coaching staff’s belief that his skills could bring fire to Penn State.

“I think Troy was beating Iowa at the half at Iowa, which we know that’s a tough place to play,” Franklin said.

“And in that game, I think he had two touchdowns on offense and one as a punt return on special teams. So for him to do it against that type of opponent on that stage gave you a lot of confidence that that could translate to us.”

    He also added:

“So, you know, I think that game carried a lot of weight with us again, specifically because we just have so much respect for what they do on special teams and what they do on defense.”

Ross’s ability to make plays against a Big Ten opponent like Iowa gave the Penn State coaching staff the reassurance they needed.

The departure of several key players from last season left Penn State needing immediate action. Franklin addressed this issue, mainly focusing on transfer additions Kyron Hudson and Devonte Ross. Both will be expected to contribute immediately.

Ross, in particular, will look to capitalize on his breakout moment against Iowa. He translates that success into a consistent role in Penn State’s offensive scheme.

Changes to the Blue-White Game Format

Aside from player personnel updates, Franklin also touched on a notable change to the annual Blue-White Game. Traditionally a fan-favorite event, the game will not be televised this year. This decision has raised some questions among supporters. To this, Franklin explained:

“There are some things that we will not do. The game will not be televised for some of the reasons we’ve already discussed, and you’ve heard other coaches maybe talk about, and we will have a spring game, probably more similar to what we’ve had in the past.”

While the game may not be as accessible to fans as in previous years, it remains an important evaluation tool for the coaching staff.
