A Mississippi State women’s basketball practice squad player allegedly gambled on NFL and college football games as a member of the program, violating NCAA rules.
The male practice squad player placed six bets worth $10 total from Sept. 28-30, according to Mississippi State’s annual NCAA violations report obtained by the Clarion Ledger through an open records request. None of the bets placed were on Mississippi State programs.

Mississippi State Women’s Basketball Practice Player Caught in Sports Betting Violation
According to documents acquired by the Clarion Ledger, the practice squad player began working for Mississippi State four days before placing the bets, in violation of NCAA bylaw 10.3, which prohibits sports wagering for athletes, coaches, and other team personnel.
Mississippi State has since increased sports wagering rules education for all male practice players and now requires an acknowledgment form to be signed. The practice squad player also deactivated his sports betting account.
ProhiBet, a sports gambling monitoring agency, alerted Mississippi State of the wagers placed, and the SEC did not impose any further punishment. The violation was one of three reported by MSU in 2024. All three were Level III, the lowest and most common infraction.
“Our compliance office does a very thorough job of routinely educating all staff and student-athletes on sports betting,” an athletics department spokesperson told the Ledger. “We have a good system for monitoring as well. That process/system allowed us to identify and address that specific issue quickly and adequately.”
The Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-11, 7-9) finished the regular season with a loss to Ole Miss Rebels (20-10, 10-6) in the second round of the SEC Women’s Tournament.
