College football insider Paul Finebaum has issued a warning to Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables ahead of the 2025 college football season.

While discussing the upcoming campaign on the popular ‘Paul Finebaum Show,’ Finebaum outlined how the Sooners have already struggled the last few years under the guidance of Venables, something that may potentially put his job at risk if the program has another poor campaign.

What Did Paul Finebaum Say About Brent Venables and Oklahoma?

Finebaum made it clear that this is a crucial season for Venables and the Sooners.

“If he can’t turn this thing around pretty quickly, I don’t think he’s going to have much hope,” Finebaum stated. “He needs a big season because he’s had two bad seasons out of three. I wouldn’t press my luck with another one.”

The pressure is on the Sooners and Venables this year after disappointing campaigns in two of his last three seasons as head coach.

In Venables’ first year, the Sooners went 6-7 overall and 3-6 against Big 12 opposition. However, his second season saw major improvement, as the Sooners went 10-3 overall and 7-2 against conference opponents. Finally, last year, the program struggled once again, this time going 6-7 overall and 2-6 against SEC opponents.

Though last season was unquestionably a disappointment after such a successful campaign the year prior, it was the program’s first year in the SEC after previously being in the Big 12 Conference, something that may have been an adjustment.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Sooners only averaged 24.0 points per game, ranking 100th overall in college football last year. The defensive side performed reasonably better, allowing only 21.5 points per game, good for 29th-best in the nation.
