Quarterback John Mateer transferred from Washington State to Oklahoma this offseason, and he’s already embracing the school’s sports culture.
John Mateer Embraces Oklahoma Sports, Watches Gymnastics in Person
On Feb. 6, Oklahoma football’s X account posted a video of Mateer taking in the sights from the gymnastics team’s competition. Mateer replied, “An absolute pleasure!!!”

The Oklahoma Sooners ended the season on a disappointing note, with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-6 conference record in their inaugural season in the SEC.
With the transfer portal, every team could quickly improve by adding athletes who already have extensive college experience. The Sooners may have identified someone who can radically transform the program and make them a legitimate contender next season.
Mateer, the top quarterback from Washington State, according to 247Sports, was the No. 1 quarterback in the transfer portal. He committed to Oklahoma on Wednesday, according to On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett.
Mateer demonstrated tremendous skills during the 2024 season, completing 65% of his throws for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also rushed for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns, displaying his dual-threat abilities. His 44 total touchdowns last season led the country, showcasing his dynamic strategic-thinking skills.
The transfer was inspired by the departure of Oklahoma’s best passer in 2024, Jackson Arnold, who went to Auburn. Mateer’s previous interactions with Coach Ben Arbuckle at Washington State influenced his decision to join the Sooners.
Mateer signed his first Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) contract upon his arrival in Norman, underscoring his marketability and the high expectations during his stint with the Sooners.
Mateer would be the Sooners’ eighth Heisman Trophy winner and fifth quarterback to win the award. The previous two winners, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, were also quarterbacks who transferred to Norman.
