Stephen A. Smith Declares Cam Ward A Better Prospect Than Shedeur Sanders

Nearly every NFL and college football pundit has weighed in on the debate over who should be the top quarterback drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. The two currently at the top of the list are the Miami Hurricanes’ Ward and the Colorado Buffaloes’ Sanders.

Recently, ESPN’s Smith let his opinion be known on the debate.

“Cam Ward should be at the top of this list,” he began. “And I say that hesitantly. Shedeur has all the intangibles, and we love the poise, we love the pedigree, we know where he gets what he has from. He can make the requisite throws, he can chunk up some yards on the ground but he’s not that mobile.”

Smith continued his soliloquy, finally reaching his talking point after propping up Sanders.

“When you look at Cam Ward: 67 percent of his passes completed, 4,313 yards, FBS-best 39 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He played five years in college — five years. In that time span, a 4:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. We can’t ignore that. So he has size, he has arm strength, he has all of those different things.”

The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Each quarterback has reportedly met with the organization’s coaches and decision-makers.

There are still nearly three months until the draft, meaning there is plenty of time for one quarterback to notably separate himself from the other — or for another signal-caller to crash the party.

The NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, will be held in late February, while on-campus pro days and organization-led visits will take place soon after. All of these factors will contribute to the decision of which quarterback to take.

While the question remains of who will be selected first, the other likely won’t last much longer in the draft order.

A case can be made that six of the teams picking in the top 10 need a quarterback ahead of the 2025 season. With Sanders and Ward having separated themselves from the pack, their services will likely be coveted.

While whoever is picked before the other will have the edge in annual average salary, the true test of who’s better in the NFL may come soon — both are experienced college quarterbacks who may see the field early as starters in the league.
