Longhorn QB Arch Manning Talks About Struggles of Playing Backup in Texas

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning discusses his decision to stay with the Longhorns despite being the backup behind Quinn Ewers.

Earlier this week, Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning sat down with ESPN analyst and reporter Marty Smith. In the interview, Manning answered numerous questions about his decision to choose Texas and his future. However, he also discussed why he decided to stay with the Longhorns despite being the backup quarterback this year.

This past year, Manning was the backup to Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. As a result, he was forced to watch from the sidelines for the majority of the campaign. However, Manning is expected to move into the starting job this upcoming year with the anticipated departure of Ewers to the National Football League.

What Did Arch Manning Say About Being the Backup QB?

Manning was asked by Smith why he decided to stay with the Longhorns despite knowing he would be the backup behind Ewers. Citing his desire to stay in Texas and his relationships with teammates and friends outside the program, he outlined that he never truly considered leaving the iconic program.

“I think mostly because I liked being here,” Manning said. “Austin [Texas] is great, I have a bunch of friends, I like my teammates, I like my friends outside of football. So, there wasn’t really any reason to leave because I wanted to be here and you know, it wasn’t always easy being the backup but I think it’s paid off and I won’t take it for granted now that I get to play a little bit more.”

Arch Manning 2025 Texas Longhorns Outlook

Manning is one of the most intriguing prospects in college football. He is the grandson of former quarterback Archie Manning and the nephew of legendary quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Eli Manning. In College Football Network’s recent all-eligible 2025 NFL mock draft, Manning was selected No. 3 overall by the New York Giants, despite being a year away from NFL draft eligibility.

“Texas’ future looks bright, with Arch Manning waiting in the wings. Manning impressed in limited action this season, throwing for 939 yards and nine touchdowns while showcasing his dual-threat ability with four rushing scores.

As he steps into the starting role next year, Manning will instantly join the Heisman conversation and elevate the Longhorns’ offensive ceiling to new heights—why not do the same for his uncle’s longtime franchise?”
