The Syracuse Orange continues to bolster its coaching staff by hiring Blaine Miller, another Georgia Bulldogs coach, as the team’s new nickels coach. The news was revealed in an ESPN report by Pete Thamel.
Syracuse Football To Hire Blaine Miller as Nickelbacks Coach
Miller, who has spent the past two seasons as a defensive analyst at Georgia, will bring this experience to Syracuse. The move also highlights the continued connection between Syracuse head coach Fran Brown and his former Bulldogs coaching staff.
This has been credited as playing a significant role in Brown’s success in his first season at Syracuse.
Miller, who has extensive experience working under Georgia’s defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and head coach Kirby Smart, will contribute to Brown’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Syracuse’s defense. This coaching connection, combined with Miller’s background in defense, makes him a natural fit for coaching the team’s nickelbacks.
Previously, Syracuse did not have a coach dedicated to the nickelback position, but the NCAA’s new rule that allows more on-field coaching positions has created an opportunity for the Orange to bring on Miller.
Syracuse’s associate athletics director, Tyler Cady, confirmed this hire, stating that no defensive assistants had left the program. This move represents a strategic enhancement to Syracuse’s defense in an attempt to make a run for an ACC title in 2025.
In addition to his experience at Georgia, Miller has also served as the defensive coordinator for Faulkner University and coached at the junior college and NAIA levels. These varied experiences have given him a comprehensive understanding of Brown’s defensive strategy.
Miller Is a Proven Coach With Valuable Experience
Syracuse football will need to fill several key positions in its secondary next season after losing several important players.
With starting safety Alijah Clark and projected starting cornerbacks Jayden Bellamy and Marcellus Barnes departing, the Orange will need leadership in the defensive backfield. Miller’s addition will help fill this void, particularly as Syracuse looks to integrate young talent into the mix.
Two highly-ranked freshmen defensive backs, Demetres Samuel Jr. and Kaylib Singleton, are expected to join the team and compete for immediate playing time.
Miller’s ability to coach young players will be vital in helping these incoming recruits adjust to the demands of college football. Miller’s focus on the nickelback position will also be a critical component of Syracuse’s defensive strategy moving forward.

Brown’s impact at Syracuse has been significant since his arrival, and his hiring of Miller is a continuation of his efforts to elevate the program. In his first season as head coach, Brown led Syracuse to a 10-3 record, and his leadership has brought renewed hope to the program.
Syracuse’s upset victory over Miami prevented the Hurricanes from advancing to the College Football Playoff, further cementing Brown’s success early in his tenure. With Miller now in place as the coach of the nickelbacks, the team is well-positioned to strengthen its defense and maintain its competitive edge.
