Smith has been the Buckeyes leading receiver on the season, totaling 71 receptions for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. His production in the College Football Playoff — namely a monster performance against the Oregon Ducks in the quarterfinals — have cemented Smith as one of, if not the best wide receiver in the nation.
He showed his ability to single-handedly take over a game against the Ducks; his five catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the first half helped the Buckeyes lead 34-8 at the half.
If Smith is dealing with an injury, even to a minor degree, it changes things for Ohio State. Expect more targets to come for receivers Emeka Egbuka and Carnell Tate — who are more than capable of a larger workload.
Egbuka is expected to be a first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, nearing 1,000 receiving yards on the season. Meanwhile, Tate stepped up in a big way against the Texas Longhorns in the semifinals, snagging seven passes for 87 yards. He led the team in receiving while Smith was held in check by the Longhorn defense.
Additionally, an increased workload could be on the table for the Buckeyes’ star running back duo of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. Each is within reach of 1,000 rushing yards on the season and has scored double-digit touchdowns.
Smith’s availability for the game doesn’t seem to be in question as of now, but his effectiveness is certainly something to monitor as the night goes along.
