With the 2024-25 college football season nearing its end and the national championship forthcoming, the offseason is bordering on a new beginning. After the Texas Longhorns’ 28-14 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl, the conversation was overtaken by Quinn Ewers’ decision to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft. Ewers, who spent three years at Texas, opted to turn pro as a redshirt junior.
CFB Analyst’s Dismissive View of Quinn Ewers’ Play
During the loss, Ewers recorded 283 yards on 23 completions, with two scores and one interception.
With the QB leaving the program, the whispers about his imprint on the college gridiron are rising. Among those weighing in is 69-year-old college football analyst Greg Cosell, who had a dismissive view of the QB’s play.
“Ewers, to me, was always a little bit of a frustrating watch. This is not based on 2024, so I want people to understand that. But he always had poor fundamental mechanics. Too many throws he made without a firm base that needed lower body balance to deliver the ball precisely.
“I’d say he’s got a plus arm, not a big arm. He throws the ball easily. I would say his arm strength limitations showed up often on deeper throws, the ball kind of lost energy on the back end.
“You know, when he did set his feet, he could throw the ball pretty well. I didn’t view him based on his 2022 and 2023 tape as a high-level prospect. I think there would be a lot of work to do. But as I said, I need to see him from 2024.
“But he’s also not a big guy, so essentially, even though he’s not a statue, Ross, you’re essentially dealing with a pocket quarterback. So he’s going to have to become much better in the details and nuances of playing from the pocket.”

Ewers came to Texas alongside high expectations. However, the Longhorns didn’t win a national title or make it to a championship game during his time.
That being said, when the QB came to Texas, the Longhorns were coming off a 5-7 season in 2021, and things were not looking great.
With Ewers as the signal-caller, the team rose from an 8-5 record to 12-2 with a Big 12 title and then 13-3 in their first season in the SEC.
In Pro Football Network’s 7-round mock draft by Jacob Infante, Ewers went No. 59 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are more than likely looking for a successor for Russell Wilson.
According to Infante’s analysis of Ewers: “Selecting Quinn Ewers would give the Steelers a strong-armed passer with ample upside while still being able to use your first-round pick on other needs. The flashes have been there to project Ewers as an NFL starter, even if he might not be ready right away.”
