‘One of the Best Quarterbacks’ – Deion Sanders’ New Weapon Kaidon Salter Gets Real on QB1 Situation With Julian Lewis

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders will have a tough job making a pick between Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis for the Buffaloes' QB1 spot.

After Shedeur Sanders’ departure to the NFL, Coach Prime will have a new quarterback in the pocket. It’s going to be a fierce battle between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and five-star commit Julian “JuJu” Lewis. Speaking about the competition inside the Colorado Buffaloes’ quarterback room, Salter seems to have no apprehensions as he looks to claim his rightful QB1 spot.

Deion Sanders’ New Weapon Kaidon Salter To Play Role of Mentor to Julian Lewis

When the 17-year-old Lewis de-committed from USC to join forces with Deion Sanders at Colorado, it was viewed as a big move to secure the QB room before Shedeur’s NFL transition. However, things turned in December 2024 when Salter transferred from Liberty to play one more year at college under Coach Prime.

On Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, Salter gave clarity on the ongoing situation during his appearance on WFAA with parents. He mentioned that the QB1 spot will be claimed by either of them based on their performance, and Colorado was looking for someone who could mentor Lewis for the long run, which is why he grabbed the offer.

“No promises. All competition, and I’m willing to come in and compete,” Salter said on Friday.

“You know JuJu. He’s a younger guy, of course. So they (Colorado) wanted somebody in the room that could mentor him and help him come into college and feel comfortable. And I felt like I was that guy that could do that.

“I met JuJu at the Elite 11. I was an Elite 11 counselor this year. So I’ve met JuJu before, and I just recently met him again. (He’s a) very, very cool dude, and he’s a playmaker, one of the best quarterbacks, one of the best quarterbacks in his class.

“So just being able to compete and go out there and do what we have to do and help each other build each other up? So it’s all love over there, and it’ll be a great competition between us, and that’ll be there with no promises, all competition. What’s the ultimate goal? Of course, QB1 and League,” he added.

Salter started his college career in 2021 with the Tennessee Volunteers; however, his off-field issues led to the Vols dismissing him, and later in 2021 he joined Liberty. The following year he was named starter and played with the program for three more years.

During this period, he recorded 5,887 yards and scored 56 touchdowns while conceding only 17 interceptions. He completed 412 of 702 passes and ran for 2,013 rushing yards with 21 touchdowns.
