The SMU Mustangs cruised past the Virginia Cavaliers 33-7 to secure their 10th win of the season, keeping a College Football Playoff berth well within reach. With just one game left in the regular season, here’s a breakdown of SMU’s CFP and ACC Championship chances.
SMU’s ACC Championship Chances
Before Week 13, SMU held a 41.04% chance to claim the ACC title, contingent on a win over Virginia, which they delivered in dominant fashion.
With the victory, and the Miami Hurricanes now just one win away from taking the other conference title spot, the Mustangs’ odds rose to 64.24%.
How Can SMU Make the ACC Championship Game?
With the win over Virginia, SMU booked its ticket to the ACC Championship Game in its first year in the conference.
They can lose to the California Bears in the season finale and still make the dance, as they hold the tiebreaker over the Clemson Tigers after defeating the Louisville Cardinals earlier this year.

Of course, the Mustangs will still want to knock off the Bears next week, and they should have little trouble doing so at home.
From there, they’ll face either the Tigers or the ‘Canes in the title game, depending on if Miami wins their Week 14 road matchup against the Syracuse Orange.

Latest SMU Playoff Probability Following Week 13
The Mustangs checked in at No. 13 in the most recent CFP Rankings, behind Miami (No. 8) and ahead of Clemson (No. 17) in the conference. SMU currently holds a 62.39% chance of securing a College Football Playoff spot but must win the ACC Championship to lock it in.
A loss in the title bout would knock them out of the race, but a win would secure a spot in the top 12, possibly even the Final Four if the Boise State Broncos lose a single game the rest of the way.
Mustangs’ Remaining Schedule
CFN’s Football Playoff Meter suggests SMU will handle its final regular-season contest with relative ease, securing its place in the ACC title match.
