A spring addition to the college football transfer portal, former Florida State defensive back Travis Jay has found a new home following his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes for the 2023 campaign.

After spending four seasons in Tallahassee, Jay entered the transfer portal as the spring window slammed shut, leaving the Seminoles with a shortage of potential safeties for the 2023 college football season. However, that’s no concern for the Buffaloes, who are bolstering their secondary with a versatile player who has experience both at safety and cornerback.
Jay will transfer to Colorado ahead of the college football season. After redshirting in 2019, he’ll have at least one year of eligibility for the Buffs. However, how long he’ll have to play in his new home is somewhat complicated by two seasons where he didn’t see the field due to academic/eligibility issues.
Furthermore, it is unclear how quickly Jay will be able to get on the field for Colorado. After impressing through spring practice for the Seminoles, the versatile defensive back was forced to miss the spring game with an undisclosed injury. His lack of playing time for FSU has somewhat clouded his potential after arriving in Tallahassee to high acclaim.

A four-star prospect in Florida State’s 2019 recruiting class, Jay was a coup for the Seminoles. An explosive athlete who played both sides of the ball — defensive back and quarterback — for Madison County High School, he also played basketball while racking up gaudy football statistics. FSU fought off the attention of Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn to land the local talent.
While he didn’t see the field in 2019 or 2020, those periods of inactivity sandwiched some decent production. In his first year of playing, he secured an interception against Duke in a win while forcing a fumble against Miami (FL). Jay added two interceptions in 2021 while continuing to show his versatility as a kick and punt returner.
With his FSU career behind him, Jay will look to rewrite his story with the Buffaloes. When he’s at his best, the former Seminole defensive back has the size, length, ball tracking skills, and athleticism to be a coverage threat. Meanwhile, his high school tape showcases his ability to hit with extreme violence coming downhill against the run.
