The Boston College Eagles coaching room got a facelift after the 2023 season when Jeff Hafley left the college ranks to be the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
Now, Bill O’Brien is in place after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots last season. Along with their new head coach, who else is on the Boston College coaching staff in 2024?
Boston College Eagles’ Coaching Staff
Head Coach, Bill O’Brien
A 32-year coaching veteran in the college and professional ranks, O’Brien returns to the ACC, where his FBS coaching career began.
After serving as an assistant for two seasons (1993-1994) at his alma mater, Brown, to start his coaching career, he took a GA position at Georgia Tech (1995-1997). He was then promoted to running backs coach (1998-2000) before he took over as the Yellow Jackets’ offensive coordinator (2001-2002).
He then went to coach the running backs at Maryland (2003-2004) before taking on another OC job at Duke (2005-2006). Following his stint with the Blue Devils, he embarked on his first stop in the NFL in various roles with the New England Patriots — offensive analyst (2007), WR coach (2008), QB coach (2009-2010), and OC (2011).
O’Brien took on his first head coaching job at Penn State in 2012. While directing the program through a postseason ban after the Joe Paterno fallout, he guided the Nittany Lions to an overall record of 15-9 and 10-6 Big Ten mark in two seasons (2012-2013).
He was named the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year in 2012 after the Nittany Lions reached eight wins, the most for a first-year coach at Penn State.
He parlayed that success to his first NFL head coaching job with the Houston Texans (2014-2020). Coaching exactly 100 games with the Texans resulting in a 52-48 record, he was let go four games into the 2020 season. He took over as Alabama’s OC (2021-2022) before rejoining the Patriots as OC for the 2023 season.
Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends Coach, Will Lawing
One of O’Brien’s most loyal assistants, Will Lawing, has been by his side since he began his FBS coaching career as a GA at Penn State in 2013, following four years as an assistant coach at Juniaita (2009-2012). Lawing first followed O’Brien to the NFL in various roles with the Texans from 2014 to 2020.
He then joined him in Alabama as an offensive analyst (2021-2022) before following back to the NFL, this time with the New England Patriots as tight end coach for one year. O’Brien hired Lawing a week after getting the BC job, giving him his first OC title.
Defensive Coordinator, Tim Lewis
Outdoing his head coach in longevity as a 36-year veteran of the high school, college, and professional ranks, Tim Lewis was named DC after serving as co-DC of the Arlington Renegades of the USFL last year.
Lewis previously served as DC for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2000-2003), the New York Giants (2004-2006), Pinecrest Academy (2018), and the Houston Gamblers (2022).
Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers Coach, Darrell Wyatt
Serving as a receivers coach nearly exclusively since 1991, Darrell Wyatt is one of a handful of holdovers from the previous staff, having been at Boston College since 2022. He’s had previous roles as WR coach at UCF (2018-2021), Houston (2016), Texas (2011-2013), Kansas (1997-2001, 2010), and the Minnesota Vikings (2006).
Special Teams Coordinator, Matt Thurin
Another holdover from the last staff, Matt Thurin has been the Eagles’ special teams coordinator since 2020. He previously worked in defensive quality control at Ohio State from 2015 to 2019 and was the special teams coordinator at Columbia from 2012 to 2015.
Quarterback Coach, Jonathan DiBiaso
Remaining with Boston College, Jonathan DiBiaso got a promotion when O’Brien arrived, moving from offensive analyst last year to quarterbacks coach in 2024.

He began his career at BC as a GA from 2018 to 2020 before moving on to Vanderbilt as an analyst (2021) and then to Pitt as a GA (2022).
Offensive Line Coach, Matt Applebaum
Matt Applebaum remains on the Boston College coaching staff after serving one season as the OL coach in 2023. He served as the Miami Dolphins OL coach prior to that (2022) after his first stint as the BC OL coach (2018-2021). He also had stops as an OL coach at Bucknell (2013) and Davidson (2016-2017).
Running Backs Coach, Savion Huggins
On staff at Boston College since 2021, Savion Huggins started as a recruiting advisor before being elevated to RB coach in 2022. He previously served as the RB coach at the University of Massachusetts in 2021.
Defensive Line Coach, Jeff Commissiong
Jeff Commissiong is back in Boston for his second stint with the Eagles after previously serving as the DL coach from 2007-2012. He last coached linebackers at Cornell (2021-2023) and was the DL coach at Old Dominion from 2013 to 2019.
Linebackers Coach, Dan O’Brien
The son of former BC head coach Tom O’Brien (1998-2006), Dan O’Brien joins the Eagles after serving as the DC for Southern Miss in 2023, where he started as safeties coach in 2021 before being elevated.
Secondary Coach, Ray Brown
Ray Brown joined Bill O’Brien’s staff after two seasons coaching the corners at Washington State (2022-2023). He previously coached corners at Utah State (2021), Troy (2019-2020), and Arizona State (2014-2015).
