As college football rumors heat up with the Early Signing Period getting ever closer, a favorite has emerged to land one of the hottest properties in the transfer portal — wide receiver Matthew Golden. According to multiple analysts, the Texas Longhorns are the team to watch for the former Houston Cougars standout.
College Football Rumors: Matthew Golden to Transfer to Texas?
In one of the more sensical college football rumors, former Houston pass catcher Golden is being heavily linked to the SEC-bound Longhorns as Texas looks to replace a large chunk of their wide receiver room.
247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wilting set the Golden to Texas ball in motion, dropping a crystal ball prediction for the third-year pass catcher late on Tuesday.
Fellow 247Sports analyst Chris Hummer quickly joined him. On3.com national reporter Gerry Hamilton has also predicted that Golden will head to Texas, with a plethora of other analysts expecting the Houston native and former Klein Cain High School standout to make the leap from the Big 12 to the SEC with the Longhorns.
After previously stating his intention to enter the transfer portal, Golden officially put himself on the market, with college football rumors surrounding his next destination surfacing almost immediately afterward.
Texas is a logical fit for the game-changing pass catcher, over two years after committing to Houston over offers from top-tier teams, including the Longhorns.
With Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, and Jordan Whittington all expected to depart for the NFL Draft, there’s a sizeable hole in the Longhorns wide receiver room to fill for the 2024 college football season. If the latest college football rumors are to be believed, Steve Sarkisian and wide receiver coach Chris Jackson will look to fill it with the 6’0″, 190-pound former Cougar.

Golden enters the portal after tallying 988 yards and 13 touchdowns for Houston during his first two seasons in college football. He’ll be a true junior with two years of eligibility for whichever team lands him, with Texas appearing to be the frontrunner to land his services.
A former 10.93 100m runner at the high school level, Golden’s speed, agility, and elusiveness make him an ideal weapon for the Texas offense. One potential stumbling block for his fit with the Longhorns, according to 247 Sports’ Hummer, is if Houston WR coach Daikiel Shorts heads to another program and attempts to take his talented pass-catcher there instead.
