After deciding to sit out for the remainder of the 2023 season to redshirt, NC State Wolfpack quarterback MJ Morris put his name in the transfer portal. Where will he end up?
We look at the likely transfer portal destinations for the dual-threat Wolfpack QB.
MJ Morris Transfer Destinations
Louisville
If you’re Morris, how could you not entertain the opportunity to work with Jeff Brohm? One of the best playcallers in the game paired with a talented dual threat, would give Louisville a perfect replacement for Jack Plummer.
Assuming Jahwar Jordan and Jamari Thrash return next year, the Cardinals have a good core of skill position talent to help Morris develop. Chris Bell, Kevin Coleman Jr., and Jadon Thompson all figure to be back in the lineup too, so Morris would have options in Brohm’s system.
Nebraska
It’s safe to say that Nebraska needs an upgrade at the quarterback position, but Matt Rhule still has the Cornhuskers on an upward trajectory despite that. Current quarterbacks Heinrich Haarberg and Jeff Sims combined for 1,187 yards, 8 touchdowns and 10 interceptions through 9 games.
Morris, on the surface, brings a similar skillset to what Sims did when he joined the Huskers. His ability to make big plays with his arm paired with his ability to create with his legs make him a dynamic dual threat. Nebraska fans hope that Morris could bring more production than Sims has thus far.
Mississippi State
With the previous two staffs, this wouldn’t have been a good fit, but Jeff Lebby makes this landing spot intriguing. Morris is a young and developing quarterback, and we’ve seen that Lebby’s system can help a guy like that become really explosive.
If you watched what Lebby did with Dillon Gabriel at both UCF and Oklahoma, you’d see what Morris can potentially do. The raw skillset combined with Lebby’s quarterback-friendly system makes this an intriguing fit.
South Carolina
Spencer Rattler continues playing at a level that will get him drafted, and South Carolina will find themselves in need of a quarterback if that continues. Shane Beamer’s offense would need a spark, and Morris gives them an option full of potential for the 2024 season.
In addition to staying closer to his hometown, Morris would work with longtime NFL assistant and current Gamecocks offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. Morris wants to get to the next level, and South Carolina could give him the right fit to meet his goals.
James Madison
Morris most likely doesn’t need to consider Group of 5 programs, but James Madison’s done a great job of elevating players with his skillset the last couple of years. Todd Centeio and Jordan McCloud found their biggest success with the Dukes, and it’s a big reason why the Dukes won 17 games under them.
If the Dukes can elevate Centeio and McCloud to the levels they reached, imagine what a more talented Morris can do. James Madison has the talent around him to make the offense explosive, and the Dukes would be a nightmare if they could land him in the portal.
