When Shedeur Sanders Questioned Coach Prime’s Game Plan in Rivalry Loss: “Why Would We Keep Running the Ball”

A mix of ups and downs marked Shedeur Sanders’ journey at Colorado. In his first year at Boulder, the Buffaloes started with three back-to-back thrilling wins, followed by a blowout loss against Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks.

There weren’t many highlights in that season from that point on, as Colorado lost most of its games, including a disappointing 28-10 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers last September.

One of the key areas that Colorado suffered in 2023 was its offense. Shedeur got sacked more than 50 times throughout the season, compared to quarterbacks like Bo Nix, who only got sacked six times.

After the Nebraska loss, Shedeur drew criticism from the fans for throwing his teammates under the bus and blaming the offensive line during the press conference.

“How many times did (Nebraska quarterback Dylan) Raiola get touched?” Sanders asked. “Of course, when you’re able to run the ball consistently, that opens up the pass, you know? But it’s just like, you’ve got to understand what your team’s good at. Why would we keep running the ball when we get out there and there’s a must-get situation and we don’t get it?”

CFB Analyst Offers Insight on Shedeur Sanders’ Starting QB Dreams at Cleveland Browns

Shedeur Sanders was expected to be one of the top five picks during the 2025 NFL Draft. However, in a shocking turn of events, he ended up sliding to the fifth round and was eventually picked by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick.

The Browns also picked former Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, which means they will have four quarterbacks competing for the starting position.

Despite the dramatic NFL Draft slide, Shedeur made sure to keep a positive attitude and give his all in the rookie mini camp, which has increased his chances of having a real shot at the starting position.

Analyst Mary Kay Cabot believes that while he may not get the opportunity to start in the first few games due to the Browns’ tough schedule, he will be put in the mix later on.

“The good news for Sanders, the Browns’ fifth-round pick out of Colorado, is that he performed so well over the final two weeks of spring ball that he’ll come back for training camp with a legitimate shot to compete for the starting job, at least in the early going,” Cabot wrote.

The Browns will kick off the 2025 season against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept 7.
