Shedeur Sanders’ NFL future didn’t start on the note he saw coming. While he was expected to be one of the top 5 picks in the 2024 draft, fans were shocked to see his draft stock fall so drastically.
The former Colorado star didn’t just drop out of the first round, but was picked in the 5th round by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick.
The Browns picked up Oregon star Dillon Gabriel as the 94th overall pick, and they also have veteran quarterback Joe Flacco and the 20th draft pick from the 2022 class, Kenny Pritchett.
Mary Kay Cabot believes that due to the Browns’ tough schedule in teh first 6 games, kits best if a veteran QB starts in the beginning.
She also believes it will be the best case scenario for Shedeur to pull something like Brock Purdy, who is a $265,000,000 quarterback (as per Spotrac), did with the 49ers.
“So if he’s doing that, that he is operating at somewhat of Brock Purdy, like Cliff, and that would be the best case scenario that you could possibly have. So right now, I think they’re willing to give him that chance to say, Alright, let’s see what you got. I mean, Shedeur calls himself legendary and all those kinds of things. So let him show them. If he can be that guy. He certainly is fun to watch and exciting, and we do see that. And you know, I am anxious to see how does it continue to look against and with a higher level of competition. So we gotta cross that hurdle. But if he can do all of those things then, and he can establish that he has some of those late round pick, Brock Purdy like tendencies, then they’re going to be really, onto something here.” (20:00)

Stephen A. Smith Opens Up About Impact of Shedeur Sanders’ Draft Slide on Deion Sanders
Shedeur’s draft slide not only came as a shock for the fans but also his father Deion Sanders.
It was reported that Coach Prime’s health took a toll after the whole situation, it even led him to lose over 14 lbs and take an extended break from his head coaching duties.
Talking about what it was like for Deion, Stephen A. Smith said:
“Deion, as I told y’all, was devastated,” Smith said on Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s First Take. “When I came on the airwaves and talked about how devastated he was… I had not spoken to him at the time. I’ve spoken to him since, because he called me to thank me for being accurate about what I was saying about the level of devastation that he had felt.
“Because it was a painstaking thing for him to endure, to watch his son plummet knowing it wasn’t because of his ability.”
Deion Sanders attended the 2025 Big 12 Media Days and refused to talk about his health.
