The Texas Tech Red Raiders are investing a huge amount of money to win the national championship. On Tuesday, July 15, On3 Sports posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Red Raiders’ roster for the 2025 season is set to cost at least $28 million. Several fans on the internet reacted to the news.
Sources told reporter Pete Nakos that Texas Tech had to pay 30% more to acquire the players of its choice because of the school’s location. The Red Raiders’ main campus is located in Lubbock, Texas.

Fans on X reacted to Texas Tech’s massive spending for its college football program.

The Red Raiders landed several players through the transfer portal, including defensive lineman Lee Hunter, edge rusher David Bailey, offensive tackle Howard Sampson, cornerback Tarrion Grant, edge rusher Romello Height, running back Quinten Joyner, kicker Upton Bellenfant, wide receiver Micah Hudson, and offensive lineman Cash Cleveland.
How Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech Fared in the 2024 Season
The Texas Tech Red Raiders finished their 2024 campaign with an 8-5 record. It was the second time they reached the eight-win mark under head coach Joey McGuire, who joined the team in 2022. The last time the Red Raiders had eight wins in the pre-McGuire era was in 2013.
Texas Tech had a winning record last season, thanks to its high-powered offense. The Red Raiders had averaged 37.6 points per contest, the highest they have scored in a season since 2016 when Patrick Mahomes led the team to an average of 43.7 points per game.
Texas Tech struggled on the defensive end, however, allowing 460.2 yards per contest. The Red Raiders were ranked 126th in the nation in total defense, a major reason why they failed to advance to the expanded College Football Playoff.
