Deion Sanders doesn’t want his student-athletes to fail subjects while they play for him. For Coach Prime, priorities are clear: your studies come before football. Recently, a video from last season resurfaced on the internet, in which he can be seen reiterating his stance to his players.
In the video, the Colorado Buffaloes coach is admonishing his players for “flunking” their subjects at the school. He sent a clear message to them, saying that the most likely outcome is that 95% of them wouldn’t be playing football by the time their college careers end.
“You guys, that’s flunking something, you got to next week or you gonna be out of the football stuff and into the class and have no more football responsibility. Cause I care more about your life than this game! Cause 95% of y’all ain’t gonna play this game when your time is up! 95% of y’all. Get that in your spirit and let it sizzle,” said Deion Sanders, clearly dissatisfied with his players’ academic performance.
The reality is even harsher than what Coach Prime told his players. According to the NFL’s College Advisory Committee, only 1.6% of college football players make it to the professional level.
Deion Sanders will rejoin the Colorado Buffaloes for the Big 12 media days
Deion Sanders has been battling an unknown health issue since April. It has kept him away from the team and on his ranch in Canton, Texas. While he hasn’t divulged the specifics of the issue that has forced him to remain away from Boulder during critical recruiting months, he has kept the fans and the media updated through social media posts and occasional interviews.
His eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., has also shared his father’s recovery journey through his social media handles. On one occasion, Deion Sanders was seen wearing a tactical vest while doing rehabilitation exercises.
Most recently, rappers Lil Wayne and Lil Twist visited the coach’s property in Canton to support him in these difficult times.
For some time now, there’s been speculation about whether Sanders will show up at the Big 12 media days. According to a report by Brian Howell of the Boulder Daily Camera, Coach Prime will show up.
“I did talk to somebody this week that said, ‘Hey, Coach Prime will be there,’” Howell said. “It sounds like his health is getting better and things are going well. I was told he will be there. He is the last guy to go (speak), and it’s only about an hour and a half from the house, so you would think he can make that.”
The trip will be an easy one for Deion Sanders, as the Big 12 media days will be held in nearby Frisco, Texas, at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ training facility. The Star is just 90 minutes away from Canton by car.
