‘I May Be a Little Intense’: Flau’jae Johnson Gets 100% Real on Her ‘Little Kim Mulkey’ Tag

LSU Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson recently got real over the comparisons she has been getting with her coach in Kim Mulkey. In a video posted by @overtimeselect on Instagram on Wednesday, July 2, Johnson, who was being interviewed by Team USA U19 member Sydney Douglas, addressed the “little Kim Mulkey” tag she’s been getting from everywhere.

This is because Johnson has had different coaching stints, especially in Overtime Select, wherein the college basketball world has drawn comparisons with her and Mulkey as they possess similar attributes from the sidelines, from their intensity to the way they impose their system.

“I may be a little intense, just a tad bit. Don’t judge me off those, that’s not me. I am a little intense, I am very intense. I mean I just try to get my players just to play with high energy, high confidence, and it’s hard being a coach because, like, I want to go out there and play, you know what I saying? I’m a little intense, and I demand. I don’t demand perfection, I just demand energy. That’s pretty much it, that’s why I’m here,” Johnson explained.

“They call me Lil’ Mulk,” she concluded.

It seems as though Johnson has embraced this trait from her coach. After all, the Savannah, Georgia native and Mulkey have won an NCAA title together in 2023 and are looking to repeat that success in the upcoming 2025-26 season. In the 2024-25 campaign, Mulkey and the Tigers were defeated by the UCLA Bruins in the Elite Eight of this year’s national tournament, 72-65.

Currently, Flau’jae Johnson has taken her talents internationally as she is in the midst of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup competition. This year’s AmeriCup, which is the continent’s official FIBA tournament, will award the winning team with a surefire place in the 2026 Women’s World Cup along with the gold medal. The 2025 AmeriCup started on June 28 and is set to run until July 6 at the Center of Collective Sports in Santiago, Chile.

With this, Johnson has decided to take time off from her busy college basketball offseason to represent the United States through Team USA Women. Joined by the likes of Iowa State Cyclones center Audi Crooks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish standout Hannah Hidalgo, Johnson and Co. are looking to give their country its fifth gold medal in AmeriCup history. After this, it’s back to the LSU Tigers for Johnson for her senior year.
