Ex-Alabama QB Sets the Record Straight on Kalen DeBoer facing ‘Unrealistic’ Pressure in Year 2

When Kalen DeBoer joined Alabama as Nick Saban’s replacement, most analysts thought he was the perfect fit for the role; however, after his first year, many fans are now concerned about the program’s future.

Alabama ended the 2024 college football season with an overall record of 9-4, which may be acceptable for some programs, but that’s far from the standard at Alabama.

Talking about the pressure on DeBoer as he heads towards his second year with the program on THE DYNASTY: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide, former Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron shared his thoughts on the situation.

McCarron talked about how being at Alabama during year one can be confusing for anybody and how the expectations at the Crimson Tide’s are almost unreachable.

McCarron also talked about how it’s not easy filling in Nick Saban, who is one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, emphasizing that DeBoer had a relatively successful year according to that.

“The expectations at Alabama are almost unreachable at times, because it’s just year in and year out expectations of winning, and especially in today’s, you know, age in college football, it makes it even tougher, because everybody’s paying now. It’s not just going off tradition and winning, and who you have there right now,” he said.

“And I mean, there’s so many factors to this, but, I mean, listen for him to have a successful first year after following possibly the greatest, you know, coach of all time, in my eyes, and I’m sure in our eyes, the greatest college football coach of all time. It’s just, you feel those shoes, I thought he’s he’s done an unbelievable job of handling everything. And he’s only going to get better,” he added (10:00).

Kalen DeBoer offers insight into Alabama’s QB situation

Now that Jalen Milroe, who was appointed at Alabama’s starting QB for two years straight has moved to complete his NFL dreams, Kalen DeBoer will have to make a choice on who’s going to replace him.

While Alabama has a talented quarterback room with veteran Ty Simpson, former Washington QB Austin Mack and 5-star recruit Keelon Russell, all three of them lack on-field experience.

Talking about who’s ahead in the QB competition, DeBoer told Paul Finebaum in May that if they had to pick the quarterback and play right now, it would be Simpson.
