Illinois QB Luke Altmyer could have pursued SEC stardom, but instead, he chose to be loyal to his program. After leading the Fighting Illini to a 10-3 record and their first 10-win season since 2001, Altmyer faced a crossroads this spring when SEC programs, including Tennessee, came calling.
In a candid interview with On3’s Pete Nakos, the former Ole Miss transfer revealed why he stayed in Champaign, instead of hopping ships to the SEC. With a top-20 preseason ranking and a shot at the College Football Playoff, Altmyer’s decision could redefine the Illini’s trajectory this season.
Luke Altmyer Shares Why He Decided To Stay In Illinois, Rejected SEC Offers
When Tennessee parted ways with quarterback Nico Iamaleava in April 2025, Illinois fans and experts started speculating about Altmyer’s next move. The Starkville, Mississippi, native had played 12 games at Ole Miss in 2021-22, so returning to the SEC, where he could play in front of familiar crowds in stadiums like Neyland, is pretty appealing for him.
“Being from Mississippi and in SEC country, that’s very, very attractive,” Altmyer told On3. For him, it was a “difficult decision.” Social media threads were filled with rumors about his next move, but Altmyer’s heart remained with Illinois.
On April 22, he posted a GIF on X of his “championship belt” celebration, captioned “Keep the Champaign Flowing,” hinting towards his “re-commitment.”

Altmyer’s decision was purely based on the trust he’s built with coach Bret Bielema and his teammates. After a 5-7 debut season in 2023, he spearheaded a 2024 turnaround, throwing for 2,548 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just six interceptions while rushing for four scores.
“The success is waiting for me here,” Altmyer explained. “It’d be foolish to pick up and start over.” Illinois HC Bret Bielema, who revitalized Altmyer’s career after Ole Miss, also has a lot of trust in Altmyer. With a 15-8 record as a starter, Altmyer’s confidence is at an all-time high.
Illinois faces a challenging 2025 slate, starting with a Week 2 clash at Duke. Road games at Penn State and Oregon will test Altmyer’s form, while a home matchup against Michigan offers a chance for revenge.

The Illini’s defense, led by All-Big Ten linebacker Gabe Jacas, manages to return eight starters, giving Altmyer a reliable support system. Still, living up to top-20 hype will demand a lot of consistency from the young QB.
