In the college football world, the coaching pool is never still. Programs don’t hesitate to fire an underperforming coach and either find a coach that guarantees instant success or rebuild the whole program. Young and talented upcoming coaches are always highly sought after and Tulane’s head coach is beginning to catch waves.
Jon Sumrall was appointed as Tulane’s head coach in 2024, and he guided them to a 9-5 record. Prior to Tulane, Sumrall spent two years at Troy, where he won back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Championships. He was named to the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.

College Football Analyst Thinks Jon Sumrall Will Coach in the SEC One Day
College football analyst David Pollack rates Sumrall very highly and claims he will land in the SEC in the future on his YouTube show “See Ball Get Ball.”
“He’s definitely next in that wave,” David Pollack said. “And I think he’s been very picky because he can be. Because he knows he’s going to be really good at Tulane. They were [9-5] last year. He gets unbelievable talent from the portal.
“Again, you’ve got to be able to recruit. Like, you’ve got to be able to do that. Also, when you see guys going into the portal that are from Tulane, going to major universities. He’s doing something right.”
Last season with Tulane, Sumrall went 9-5 with the program after going 9-3 in the regular season. That included a loss in the AAC Championship Game and a loss in the Gasparilla Bowl.
Now, going into 2025, Tulane is expected to be one of the conference’s best teams yet again. That’s in no small part because of the talent he’s brought to New Orleans.

Tulane returns more than half of its production from last season, ranking it 70th nationally according to Bill Connelly’s returning production rates. Tulane also brings in the No. 2 portal class in the AAC.
Tulane brought in three quarterbacks through the portal: Kadin Semonza from Ball State, Donovan Leary from Illinois, and Brendan Sullivan from Iowa.
Semonza had 2,904 passing yards last season and 25 passing touchdowns. Sullivan has 1,778 career passing yards and 13 touchdowns. These two bring quality to the quarterback department.
