Dan Lanning, Oregon Making Major Move for Top 2027 Tight End Rahzario Edwards

In modern college football, recruiting begins years in advance, with top programs securing commitments from high school players as early as their sophomore or junior year. Oregon’s 2025 class initially lacked five-star talents, leading experts to view it as lagging behind elite programs like Alabama and Georgia.

Head coach Dan Lanning took this as a learning experience and is now aggressively pushing to avoid falling behind in future recruiting cycles, especially with the 2027 class emerging. As a result, their primary target is four-star tight end Rahzario Edwards.

Rahzario Edwards Draws Major Interest from Oregon Football for 2027

Lanning, the head coach of Oregon, and his team are making a significant effort to secure Edwards, a top tight end in the 2027 class. Ranked as the No. 3 tight end and No. 51 overall player in the nation, Edwards is an exceptional talent. But winning his commitment won’t be easy. Edwards has received 23 offers, with top programs like USC and Michigan chasing him aggressively.

So, why is Oregon making such an aggressive move for Edwards? One reason is simple—they want to stay ahead in the recruiting race. But there’s more to it.

The Ducks also need depth at the tight end position. Since Lanning took over, Oregon hasn’t signed more than one tight end in a single class. That could change in 2027. Coach Lanning targets Edwards and four-star prospect Zac Fares, possibly breaking that trend.

Grant Union High School standout Edwards recently shared his thoughts on Oregon with 247Sports, and it’s clear the Ducks are making a strong impression. There’s a noticeable sense of positivity in his words.

He expressed his respect for the program and its coaching staff, specifically mentioning defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi and offensive coordinator Will Stein as key reasons he holds Oregon in high regard.

“Oregon is definitely up there for me,” Edwards told 247Sports. “Coach Tosh is my guy, so is coach (Drew) Mehringer. They’re definitely recruiting me the hardest right now. I love the staff, they’re great people, Coach (Will) Stein is a great guy, and the spring game was lit. Coach (Dan) Lanning is my guy, too.”

With official visits lined up and Oregon making a strong impression, Edwards’ recruitment will be one to watch. It will be interesting to see if Coach Lanning can finally win over programs like USC and Michigan to secure the California native’s commitment.
