Analyst Explains Why Penn State’s 2027 Class Might Be Unlike Anything We’ve Seen Before

Penn State is known historically for having strong recruiting classes, and it looks like they are not stopping anytime soon. The 2025 college football season hasn’t started yet, and the class of 2026 is about ten months away, but Penn State is already securing commitments for 2027.

That’s how proactive Penn State is about its future. According to 247Sports rankings, Penn State currently holds the number one spot for recruiting in the 2027 class. The class is still very young, and rankings will change significantly, but Penn State is off to a flying start.

Analyst Says Penn State’s 2027 Recruiting Class Could Be Historic, With 3 Potential 5-Stars Already Committed

Zach Seyko, a college football analyst and Penn State insider, talked about the program’s 2027 class, and he believes it could be historic.

“I’m not using the word historic lightly here, Penn State is already on track to have not one, not two, but potentially three five-star commitments. They already committed to the class of 2027,” Seyko said.

“2027 is of to a fantastic start, fantastic, phenomenal doesn’t even begin to describe it for Penn State at this point in time with the class of 2027…they have a top 10 player committed, a top 20 player committed and a the number 32 overall player committed based on On3’s ranking scheme ”

James Franklin and Penn State secured three commitments from the 2027 class: Kemon Spell, Khalil Taylor, and Layton Von Brandt.

Spell will start his junior season at McKeesport (Pa.) High as the nation’s 26th-ranked player, according to the 247Sports Composite, and the No.1 running back of the 2027 class. Taylor is a  5’11”, 180-pound wide receiver from Pittsburgh’s Seton La Salle High.

He announced his commitment to Penn State on March 29. He is the 46th-ranked player nationally, the No. 9 athlete in 247Sports’ 2027 class, and the No. 2 overall player in Pennsylvania. He’s also the third-ranked receiver in the country.

As of now, Penn State has three players in the 2027 class, meaning there are many more players yet to commit to the program.
