Joel Klatt Says This Lost Rivalry Needs to Return to College Football Every Year

There are some historic rivalries in college football that are not played every season, but many fans think they should be. From Notre Dame and USC to Miami and Florida, some matchups just feel like they should be annual.

One of these matchups is Nebraska and Colorado, which recently made a comeback in 2023 and 2024, but will not be played again for the foreseeable future. This disappoints many college football fans, including Fox Sports football analyst Joel Klatt.

Klatt Calls for Annual Showdown Between Colorado and Nebraska to Be Restored

On his podcast, “The Joel Klatt Show,” Klatt broke down what makes the Nebraska vs Colorado rivalry so great.

Klatt first expressed his ties to this rivalry, saying, “This is the rivalry that I grew up on. This is the rivalry that made me, personally, fall in love with college football.”

Klatt talked about the fantastic history of this rivalry, saying, “If you look from the middle of the 80s until about 2005, this matchup likely either decided the Big Eight champion or the Big 12 North Division champion.”

The rivalry is one of the best in the sport, as these two teams have met 73 times in their programs’ history. Lincoln and Boulder are in neighboring states, and that proximity means that both fan bases are in constant contact with each other.

To remove that kind of rivalry from these fans is almost sacrilegious. Nebraska has its out-of-conference opponents scheduled through 2034, and Colorado is not on that list, meaning it will be at least a decade before we see these teams square off again.

The Cornhuskers have a record of 52-21-2 in this series, but both squads have produced some electric games. 2019 Colorado defeated Nebraska in an overtime upset, 34-31. In 2001, the Buffaloes knocked off the No. 1-ranked Cornhuskers in a 62-36 shootout.

Games like those will be missed, and hopefully, one day, as Klatt wants, we’ll get this matchup every year.
