Why Urban Meyer Believes Louis Murphy Never Got the Credit He Deserved at Florida

Meyer has been a significant judge of talent in his past coaching career at the helm of the Ohio State University and the University of Florida football teams. In a recent interview, he talked about the one player he felt didn’t get enough praise during his time coaching the Gators, which might’ve caught some fans by surprise. Meyer spilled the beans while appearing on the Another Dooley Noted Podcast, hosted by Pat Dooley.

“I think Louis Murphy. I’m a Louis Murphy fan,” Meyer said. “I mean you think about the biggest games he had were in the biggest (stages). The Florida State game down there where he caught that wheel route. Then one of his greatest games of all time was that ‘Bama ’08 in the SEC Championship. He was dominant. And Georgia in the Cocktail Party when he did a great release on that corner.”

Murphy, hailing from St. Petersburg Florida, had a breakout junior season with the Gators after being on special teams as a freshman and nabbing one catch his sophomore year from budding star quarterback Tim Tebow. His junior year is where he stood out, pulling in five touchdowns to go with 36 for 544 yards.

His senior year saw him shine, capped off with a key touchdown reception in the national championship against the University of Oklahoma Sooners, which the Gators won 24-14.
But Murphy would struggle during his professional career due to multiple knee injuries over the following ten years.

“He was an inspiring guy,” Meyer said. “Louis Murphy, to me, I’m sitting here going through in my mind, but Louis Murphy, to me, could be the most underrated, one of the most underrated I ever coached.”
