To be honest, I don’t love many players in this game for daily fantasy purposes, especially with multiple other games in the slate having totals in the 50s.
The biggest question is whether or not Cam Rising will play for the Utes. The Utah medical staff will not let its star quarterback play unless he’s 100%.
He won’t be on any sort of running restriction or pitch count of sorts once he’s cleared to play, so when he does come back, he’s an immediate play with upside as a runner. He’s put up less than 20 fantasy points just twice in the last two seasons.
If Rising plays, pair him with starting tight end Thomas Yassmin, one of his favorite red zone targets. Those two values should be enough to let you start one of the ACC quarterbacks and a star running back or receiver.
Oregon State’s running back rotation is not conducive to confidence in DFS slates. Both Martinez and Fenwick will get their touches but are often overly reliant on touchdowns to put up big fantasy scores. Especially against Utah’s stout front, it’s difficult to project which of the two — if either — has a strong day.
Uiagalelei is priced just a bit too high for my liking, especially with an implied team total of just 24 points. That being said, he’s been excellent this season, and a breakout game in front of a national audience isn’t out of the picture.
Be careful putting too much DFS stock into this game and spend the majority of your resources on other games in the slate. But if Rising starts, he’s one you need to play.
Prediction for Utah vs. Oregon State
This might be the best game of the weekend, and it’s extremely difficult to project. I originally liked the Beavers when this game opened as a pick ’em, and evidently, so did many bettors, as the game has moved past the important number of 3.
When this game opened, there was uncertainty surrounding Rising’s availability and that’s gotten murkier as the week goes on. Kyle Whittingham will play this one close to the vest, but as the weather forecast gets more and more set in stone, I lean towards Rising sitting this one out. A wet field in Corvallis does not make an ideal return for a mobile quarterback nine months removed from ACL surgery.
That means the Utes will turn to Nate Johnson in a hostile environment against a strong Oregon State team that is fuming after a loss to Washington State in Pullman last week. Without Rising’s mobility, the Utah rushing attack has been uncharacteristically weak this season and Oregon State’s defense is underrated.
If you could have gotten in early in the week, Oregon State -1 or -2 looks like a great play right now. If you weren’t, I’m not as crazy about the Beavers and the points at -3.5. If Rising is unexpectedly announced as the starter and you can get in before the line moves, I’d do that.
Given that Rising is trending towards being out, I like the Beavers but actually like the over as it sits.
The weather forecast pushed the under down significantly from where it opened, but it may not be as wet as initially indicated. Utah held a talented UCLA offense to just seven points last week, but the Bruins averaged 1.4 points per drive in drives that reached the Utah 35.
Oregon State has scored at least 25 in every game, and even with the Utah offense less than full strength, the Utes should be able to score a few times, perhaps defensively for a third straight week.
Take the Beavers and the over in a close, entertaining game.
