Behind quarterback Taylen Green, a conference-leading plethora of playmakers and a defense expected to dominate despite the loss of some key pieces, Boise State came into the season as the favorite to lift the Mountain West crown. After Washington eviscerated their defense, and Green saw some early season struggles, it’s fair to say they’re not the complete package yet.
Meanwhile, San Diego State has begun 2023 much the same way that they finished 2022. Other than their 36-point explosion against FCS outfit Idaho State, they’ve struggled to put points on the board. Brady Hoke’s team rank 10th out of 12 in the Mountain West for passing offense and second to last for scoring offense through Week 3 of the season.
Their defense can be stout against similar competition levels, but they were exposed on the ground in their defeats to UCLA and Oregon State, allowing an average of over 200 yards per game against the run. The presence of Holani (potentially), Jeanty, and freshman Jambres Dubar should prove too much for the Aztecs as the Broncos open their Mountain West account with a win.
