According to insider Heather Dinich, talks on an expanded College Football Playoff have stalled for the time being.

She spoke about that recently on The Pat McAfee Show:

Dinich also noted how the next iteration of the College Football Playoff could hold 14 teams, which would be the biggest playoff format yet when it comes to the College Football Playoff.

With the success that the playoff format has had in recent years, this makes plenty of sense. It is just a matter of time before the committee decides that it is time to expand from 12 teams to 14.

What Makes the College Football Playoff Great

The College Football Playoff is great for one reason:

Every single team in the FBS has a chance at the beginning of the season to make the dance.

While the schedule allows for everything to work itself out, every team has a chance to make a run at the beginning of the year. This means that fans around the country have a right to be excited every year, as they are filled with plenty of hope. Even schools from smaller conferences, such as the MAC and the Mountain West, have reason to believe.

The bigger the bracket is, the more room there is for error, even if teams are trying to avoid losing. Last season, Ohio State went on to win the national title after losing to Michigan at the end of the regular season. If this were still a four-team bracket, the Buckeyes likely would not have made it.

Once the bracket reaches 14 teams, assuming it passes with enough votes, it has a chance to be the ultimate sports spectacle.

But for now, it will still be a 12-team bracket with plenty of intrigue surrounding it.
