The upcoming 2025 season for LSU is expected to be highly competitive. However, even before the Tigers step onto the field, college football analyst Josh Pate has issued an urgent warning.
His latest analysis takes aim at LSU’s offensive imbalance and defensive instability, warning that the team must fix these issues fast or risk falling behind early in the season.

Josh Pate Says LSU Must Find Offensive Balance and Defensive Consistency Fast
On “Josh Pate’s College Football Show,” Pate talked about how LSU needs to fix some big problems before the season starts. He said that LSU’s offense isn’t balanced, and their defense is shaky. Last year, they relied too much on passing the ball and didn’t run enough.
He pointed out that LSU was really good at passing but terrible at running. He added, “LSU needs to be balanced enough offensively. They were seventh throwing the ball and 107th rushing the ball last year.”
This made it easy for other teams to guess what LSU would do, especially on third downs. When teams know you aren’t going to run the ball, they can just focus on stopping the pass. This made it harder for LSU’s quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, to do his job.
Pate also explained that if a team can run and pass well, the defense has to guess what’s coming next. LSU didn’t have that balance last year, which made their offense predictable.
He shared, “Does that defensive coordinator truly believe you’re willing to run the ball or throw the ball on that down? If he believes that, you have achieved balance no matter what the stat sheet says. They didn’t have that last year.”
Pate also talked about LSU’s defense. He said the team brought in new players through the transfer portal, but they need to perform right away.
“Blake Baker is a great defensive coordinator, and he did as much as he could last year,,” Pate said. “But this year, that’s really when you should start to see more sustainable, like, year-over-year sustainable-type improvement defensively.”

He also said LSU’s defense needs to improve quickly, especially with tough teams like Clemson, Florida, and Ole Miss coming up early in the season.
His advice is clear: fix that one-dimensional offense and weak defense that frustrated Tigers fans last year, or risk falling behind and missing a shot at the playoffs.
