Mike Norvell Breaks Silence on WR Exodus: ‘There Had To Be Some Real Conversations’

The Florida State Seminoles have had some key losses this offseason on offense.

Unfortunately for head coach Mike Norvell, a couple of those losses have come in the wide receiver room.

Mike Norvell Addresses Wide Receiver Departures and the Tough Talks That Followed

In a recent press conference with the media to wrap up the spring, Norvell addressed the state of his wide receiver room.

Here is what he had to say:

“We’re gonna continue to build upon the competition within that room. If there’s an opportunity to add an experienced playmaker…that’s something we’ll look at.”

The reason why this position group is a topic of conversation is because former Seminoles wide receivers Hykeem Williams, Jordan Scott, and Jalen Brown transferred out of the program earlier this year. Norvell mentioned in the presser how he could not come to terms financially with those players through tough conversations.

Now, it will be up to the likes of transfer pass-catchers Squirrel White and Duce Robinson, along with Elijah Moore and Lawayne McCoy, to fill the void left by those players.

Florida State Looking to Move Past 2024

Simply put, the Seminoles had a nightmare of a season in 2024. A year after going undefeated in the regular season, Norvell and Co. finished a dismal 2-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

It will be up to Norvell and some of the players who are stepping in at positions, such as quarterback and wide receiver, to turn the ship around.

Of course, it all starts at the quarterback position. Veteran quarterback Thomas Castellanos will be stepping in as the starter this season after transferring in from Boston College. After tossing 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions for the Eagles last year, he will look to make his mark in Tallahassee. Of course, he rushed for over 1,100 yards in 2023.

Other transfer players like Squirrel White and Duce Robinson will be key for the growth of the Seminoles’ offense. White is two years removed from an 800-yard receiving season at Tennessee and Robinson is looking to come into his own after having a career year at USC in 2024.

Time can only tell whether or not Norvell will look to add more veteran players via the transfer portal or not.
