Former Clemson Basketball Player Set To Join Tigers Football Team

After four years putting in the work as a big man for the Clemson Tigers basketball team, Ian Schieffelin is making the switch to football.

The 6’8” forward, who averaged 12.4 points for the Tigers last year, has been the apple of Dabo Swinney’s eye, with the head coach proclaiming on multiple occasions Schieffelin could play football if he wanted. Schiefflin played quarterback and tight end through his sophomore year of high school.

After Tiger Illustrated — Clemson’s Rivals forum — hinted at Schieffelin joining the football team Wednesday, The State Newspaper followed on the news, reporting he is “considering” a move to the football team.

“A team source said Schieffelin hasn’t made a formal decision on whether or not to pursue a football opportunity, but all indications are that he’ll trade his basketball shoes at Littlejohn Coliseum for a pair of cleats at Memorial Stadium,” The State reported.

Schieffelin was a three-year starter for the Tigers basketball team, starting 99 games and appearing in 134. He had his best season last year, starting all 34 games while averaging 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He averaged 10.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists his junior year. He starred in the team’s upset win against No. 4 Kentucky in Dec. 2024, putting up 11 points and pulling down 20 boards.

The news comes after reports that Schieffelin was entering the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month. But seemingly Swinney worked his charm.

Last fall, Swinney announced he would convince Schieffelin to put on cleats, saying he could play defensive end or tight end.

“When he’s done with basketball I’m gonna get him out here at D-end, tight end. That’s a football player,” Swinney told The State. “I’ll definitely have a spot.”
