When Virginia takes to the field on Saturday, it’ll be 300 days since the program was devastated by the tragic loss of three of their own in an on-campus shooting. The game, dubbed the ‘UVA Strong’ game, will feature a multitude of tributes and moments of remembrance for Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Davis Jr. A win would be another way to honor their memory.

However, a tough campaign awaits Virginia this season. They already suffered a shellacking at the hands of SEC titan Tennessee to open the season, and there will be similarly tough tests in their ACC schedule. Usually, a Week 2 matchup with a Sun Belt squad would be a slam dunk in the win column. Yet, with QB questions entering the game, it could be far from such.

James Madison isn’t just any old Sun Belt cupcake on the Cavalier schedule, either. Curt Cignetti’s team was a surprise package last fall, going 6-2 in their first season of Sun Belt play while tallying an 8-3 overall record. This fixture should have been on the 2022 schedule but was understandably canceled in the wake of the tragedy that struck the Virginia football program.

Despite losing several key components from that impressive team, James Madison didn’t skip a beat in their season opener as they swept aside FCS outfit Bucknell. You could argue that this game is their national championship, a potential Power Five scalp that they couldn’t claim last fall. However, with a strong Sun Belt conference ahead, it might not even be their toughest.
